Why You Should Go to a Chiropractor
Altoona Chiropractor: Part of the chiropractic approach involves determining whether the body’s natural structure has caused problems with the functions in other areas of your body because of reactions in the nervous system. Structural changes can affect the nerves and the spinal cord by affecting the normal communication of information from the brain to the rest of the body.
Along with specialized chiropractic treatment, Dr. Michael Vipond, Dr. Eddy Luke and the team at Health First Chiropractic Altoona will provide you with rehabilitation exercises, advice on posture and stress management and nutritional advice. The most important aspect of chiropractic care is the comprehensive approach to treatment and management of a patient’s unique condition.
About Chiropractic Care
The non-invasive, drug-free, hands-on approach focuses on patient examination, diagnosis and customized treatment. Through diagnostics, we are trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises to patients. We also recognize the importance and health-related benefits of nutrition and proper lifestyle choices.
At its most basic, chiropractors perform a therapeutic procedure called spinal adjustment or chiropractic manipulation.
In most cases, back pain emanates from the misalignment (called vertebral subluxation) of the spinal vertebrae. The subluxation, basically an impinged nerve, causes irritations of the spinal nerve which in turn inhibits the normal nerve flow from the brain to the tissue. A gentle chiropractic adjustment is used to realign the spine.

Types of Techniques Used at Health First Chiropractic Altoona
Impulse Adjusting Technique
This is our most popular method of chiropractic adjustment because of its ability to provide patients with a low force / gentle adjustment without the “cracking” sound heard with your typical manual techniques. This is achieved by using a mechanical device. This type of adjustment is incrediblly effective and very popular with both children and the elderly. The photo to the right shows Dr. Vipond performing this procedure with one of his patients.
The technique, originally developed by Dr. James M. Cox, is based on the application of small, precise amounts of flexion distraction to the part of the spine experiencing disc compression or herniation.
This type of adjustment technique utilizes a special table with a weighting mechanism that gives way shortly after the thrusting adjustment is rendered and provides for a gentler manipulation of the spine.
Manual therapies are physical treatments provided to our patients which include kneading and manipulation of muscles, joints, and joint mobilization to decrease pain and healing time.
Myofascial / Trigger Point
Trigger point therapy involves the alleviation of pain through the release of tight areas of the muscle tissue (trigger points) with specialized massage techniques. These trigger points are often located away from the main source of pain. For example, a trigger point in the back may cause pain in the area of the neck.
Electro Muscle Stim
Electric impulses are used as a rehabilitation therapy for musculoskeletal injuries such as damage to bones, joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons. The electric stimulation aides in the prevention of disuse muscle atrophy.
Therapeutic ultrasound at our clinic helps decrease swelling and increase healing for a variety of ailments and injuries.
